Concussions are often the result of a direct blow to the head. While some may lose consciousness after suffering a concussion, this is not always the case. People may suffer a concussion without receiving a direct blow to the head and they may not lose consciousness. They may just experience light headedness or dizziness. After a direct or indirect blow to the head many people will experience:
- Irritability or emotionally labile
- Loss of sleep
- Inability to focus
- Blurred vision
- Balance problems
- Sensitivity to light
- Sensitivity to sound
- Nausea and vomiting
Many people who have suffered a concussion will continue experiencing some of these symptoms for months if not years after the original injury. This is call post-concussion syndrome and it is extremely common, especially in athletes.
Concussion awareness is on the rise, and many schools and sporting programs have instituted concussion screening procedures before practice even begins. If you would like more information about setting up a screening program for your school, please call our office at 303-993-2323.
